Fishwife

Last year I followed TikTok creator @alihooke, a professional chef and content creator, as she took us along on her and her husband’s “tinned fish date nights.” The new version of a charcuterie board with, you guessed it, tin fish. As a seafood lover myself, I was so excited to try some out for myself and immediately ran to Whole Foods where I found a wide array of selections. Fishwife caught my eye immediately. The bright, funky graphics draw you in and the amazing tastes have you coming back for more.

Fishwife is a woman-founded and led food company aiming to make ethically sourced, premium, and delicious tinned seafood a staple in every cupboard.

I have followed the company ever since discovering it a year ago. The LA based brand is sold in a few stores near me and has a wide selection in their online store. But when I found out they were hosting a pop-up in New York- I had to attend.

Storefront in NYC!

The outside had the iconic graphics and colorful display of the Fishwife brand. Inside you were greeted by a floor to ceiling wall packed with different hats, sweatshirts, marble boards and of course tinned fish. The pop up was adorable and I was especially excited to see some new fish I had yet to try.

My good pals Michelle and Joe came along, both haven't ever had tin fish and were very excited to try!

On our way out we started talking to a lovely lady outside who we learned is Fishwife Grandma (the founder and CEO’s mom)! She was very warm and kind and gave us a little inside scoop on how Fishwife came to be. Created during the early months of the pandemic, cofounders Becca Millstein and Caroline Goldfarb had the idea to make cooking just a little easier. We learned that Becca was inspired by her time abroad in Spain and the culinary scene there. She was specifically inspired by the preserves and canned goods. Not only is it delicious, but extremely healthy and convenient for home cooking. Becca’s mom shared how her and her husband would throw any tinned fish on a piece of toast, a salad or a rice bowl for a simple and delicious meal at home. Her absolute favorite Fishwife tin is the rainbow trout. It was so wonderful getting to chat with her and hear more about the brand on a personal level.

For my taste test, I really wanted to make some sort of platter, combining a bunch of flavors that I thought would compliment the fish. You can really throw in anything you want. I love pickled vegetables and dips, and knew I needed some crunch in there. I’m a savory girl through and through, and it was really fun just going off what I thought sounded good, rather than following a recipe.

This is one of my most favorite lunches I have ever had and will definitely become a staple in my home. The Mackerel and Rainbow Trout were so delicious, it’s hard to believe you can eat such delicious fish at an affordable price right at home. As someone who loves all kinds of seafood, Fishwife is a simple way to incorporate it Into my everyday. You can also make your own delicious, nutritious, convenient and sustainable “seacuterie” board!
