The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Featured on Reese Witherspoon’s book club list, The Guest List by Lucy Foley is a standout recommendation for those who love psychological thrillers and mysteries. Gaining traction on “Booktok” back in 2020, it seemed like an interesting story to pick up. Many intriguing characters gather together for the wedding of successful magazine writer Julia and TV celebrity Will, on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. As guests gather to celebrate, underlying tensions among them begin to simmer, each connected by intricate relationships that reveal hidden animosities. Foley expertly weaves the narrative through the perspective of various characters- the wedding planner, the bridesmaid, the best man, the plus one and the bride- inviting us to explore their sinister truths. When a murder disrupts the celebration, the guests are forced to confront their paths and unravel what has transpired.

This is the perfect rainy day read. Foley immerses readers into the atmospheric world of The Guest List, with its overcast mountains, foggy ocean and biting chill- the ideal backdrop for a murder mystery. the plot is refreshingly unpredictable, keeping you guessing until the end. While the pacing slows a bit in the middle, I was always eager to pick it up. I found myself eager to dive back into the story, intrigued by the piecing together of evidence and the unfolding of clues.

Prepare to delve deeply into each character’s psyche; Foley is a masterful storyteller. Each one harbors the potential for guilt, shaped by estranged relationships and murky histories. They may not all be entirely likable, but they are undeniably captivating, each with their own compelling motives for murder.

The last 50 pages completely gripped; I simply couldn’t tear myself away until I reached the final line. I was desperate to uncover the truth! In comparison to Finlay Donovan, which was my first book in the mystery genre, The Guest List embraces the aesthetic of its category. I believe this style of writing can be quite polarizing for readers, but personally, I love the multiple perspectives, especially when piecing together a murder mystery. Foley skillfully navigates time, employing plenty of foreshadowing, which I find enhances the reading experience and keeps me engaged.

This book delves into themes of revenge, jealousy, betrayal, and the pursuit of perfection. It’s an intense and suspenseful read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoy thrillers and mysteries, this book is perfect for cozying up with during the chilly months ahead!
